Red Noise Baltship

2023-2024

The Red Noise Baltship aims to enhance visibility and connect the region to reduce underwater noise from commercial and recreational shipping activities in the Baltic Sea.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

Given the need of awareness, regional cooperation and need of progress for the achievement of targets to reduce underwater noise from increasing shipping activities, the RED NOISE BALTSHIP project´s goal is to address these needs and push towards stronger action.

We have already been working with underwater noise issues in the Baltic Sea, in collaboration with our MOs BUND, through the development of awareness campaigns, dedicated workshops and side events, publications and policy advocacy.

This project will engage with different governance levels, understanding that a cross-sectoral and multi-level governance is essential to ultimately address the regional challenge of reducing underwater noise from shipping activities in the Baltic Sea.

It will be carried out in cooperation with Foundation for Development of the University of Gdańsk (FRUG), Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND), Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LIAE), The Fisheries Secretariat (FishSec).

RED NOISE BALTSHIP IN A NUTSHELL

What is the main goal of the Project?

The Red Noise Baltship aims to enhance visibility and connect the region to reduce underwater noise from commercial and recreational shipping activities in the Baltic Sea.

How the project is implemented?

The work plan of the Red Noise Baltship includes:

  • Networking & advocacy
  • Public awareness raising campaign & communication
  • Education materials & activities

What is the expected impact?

Underwater noise is a problem that is transboundary in its nature. With partners from different sectors (NGO and higher education and research institutions), having relevant previous experience on impacts and underwater noise from shipping activities, as well as knowledge on national decisions and needs, gives the RED NOISE BALTSHIP project a holistic approach allowing  to work with the challenge in different, but integrated ways and reaching different target groups.
