Green Recovery for Ukraine:
From Source-to-Sea

2026-2027

The project aims to support the implementation of a Green Recovery Plan for the Ukrainian part of the Baltic Sea Basin, with a specific goal to address the gender gap which exists in the sectors of waste management and organic agriculture in Ukraine.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

This project - funded by SIDA and run in collaboration with partners and CCB Member Organizations from Ukraine - will help Ukraine to enhance gender equality in employment by promoting equal opportunities for all genders entering waste management and organic agriculture sectors.

In order to address the issues and reach the goal of reducing the gender gap, the project will approach relevant stakeholders and will include quantitative and qualitative research work, methodology development, capacity building and pilot implementation.

THE PROJECT IN A NUTSHELL

What is the main goal of the Project?

The project will focus on reducing the gender gap in the waste management and organic agriculture sector in Ukraine, along with recovery actions.

Activities within the project will include:

  • Empowering and empowering civil society organizations to combat poverty through job creation;
  • Improving good working conditions;
  • Promoting education and awareness;
  • Improving environment and climate conditions;
  • Strengthening the empowerment of women and girls.

How the project is implemented?

The activities will include:

- Desk research: collection and analysis of open-source data on water quality in the basins of the Western Bug and the Sian, as well as focus groups and interviews with communities, veterans, and volunteers about the role of rivers for psychological resilience. The results will be summarized in a report with clear recommendations for local authorities.

- Identification and mapping: based on the research, potential water bodies for restoration and recreational use will be mapped (natural zones, river ecosystems, coastal areas).

- Pilot interventions: organization of “eco-therapy” practices and small-scale initiatives such as excursions and “days by the water” for veterans, women, and children affected by the war.

- Dialogue and advocacy: establishment of a platform for dialogue between local communities, scientists, and authorities to create long-term strategies for water resource management.

What is the expected impact?

The expected results are:

  • Local communities actively involved in decision-making processes on environmental and water-related issues.
  • Women empowered to lead and contribute to ecological research, monitoring, and advocacy; young women inspired to pursue leadership roles in sustainable development.
  • Increased protection of rivers and water resources in the basins of Western Bug and Sian, with recommendations for climate adaptation integrated into local planning.
  • Natural ecosystems used as safe spaces for recovery, contributing to the mental health and resilience of war-affected populations.
  • Ukrainian NGOs and communities connected with international networks, sharing knowledge and advocating for sustainable and inclusive water management at regional and European levels.
