The DUNE3 seeks to implement collaborative planning and pilot actions for Grey dunes restoration in the South-East Baltic (Latvia, Lithuania, Poland).
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT
Coastal areas in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland are increasingly affected by erosion, climate change, and tourism pressure. One of the most vulnerable ecosystems is grey dunes - rare, protected habitats that act as natural coastal barriers and support biodiversity. Despite their importance, grey dunes are degrading rapidly.
Local authorities (and other owners of the grey dunes), NGOs, and protected area administration often face similar challenges but have limited opportunities to collaborate or use shared tools and long-term strategies.
This project - funded by Interreg Baltic Sea Region - brings these actors together to build cooperation, share experience, and develop practical solutions. The main output will be the Joint Baltic Grey Dune Restoration Plan, with annexes adapted to each country’s context (Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland).
The project also fosters trust and long-term collaboration, contributing to more resilient coastal regions in the Baltic Sea area.
DUNE3 PROJECT IN A NUTSHELL
What is the main goal of the Project?
DUNE3 aims to protect and restore grey dunes — rare, protected coastal habitats in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland that are rapidly degrading under pressure from erosion, climate change, and tourism. By bringing together local authorities, dune owners, NGOs, and protected area administrations, it seeks to build the cooperation and shared tools these actors currently lack.
How the project is implemented?
The project develops a Joint Baltic Grey Dune Restoration Plan, with country-specific annexes for Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland, and tests restoration methods through pilot activities in Latvia and Lithuania.
Alongside this, it produces educational and communication tools — a documentary film, leaflets, podcasts, and citizen science materials to raise awareness and support practical, nature-based solutions on the ground.
What is the expected impact?
Beyond the direct partners, the project's results will reach coastal communities, educators, and visitors, deepening knowledge of and ownership over these fragile ecosystems.
By fostering trust and long-term collaboration among stakeholders, it contributes to more resilient coastal regions across the Baltic Sea.
