HAZGONE

2025-2028

The HAZGONE project aims at equipping public authorities, NGOs, and businesses in the Baltic Sea region with knowledge, best practices, and training to tackle hazardous substances and micropollutants through the first holistic strategy, combining prevention at the source and advanced clean-up at the end of the pipe.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

There is no doubt that hazardous substances (HAZ) and micropollutants (MPs) represent closely connected challenges and a significant concern in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). In practice, however, these issues are often addressed separately through two distinct approaches: “upstream” measures, such as the prevention, substitution, and disposal of hazardous substances, and “downstream” measures, including the monitoring, analysis, and removal of micropollutants.

The HAZGONE platform seeks to bridge these approaches by supporting local and national authorities, non-governmental organisations, business associations, and other stakeholders with a comprehensive understanding of hazardous substance sources and pathways. Building on strong outputs developed in Interreg BSR projects such as NonHazCity 1–3, EMPEREST, ChemClimCircle 1–2, APRIORA, and others, the platform brings together existing knowledge and tools using the Baltic Smart Water HUB as its digital headquarters.

HAZGONE IN A NUTSHELL

What is the main goal of the platform?

The main goal of HAZGONE platform is to equip local and national authorities, non-governmental organisations, business associations and others with a holistic understanding of the hazardous sources (upstreams and downstreams) and pathways in the Baltic Sea region.

How the platform is implemented?

Building on strong outputs developed in Interreg BSR projects such as NonHazCity 1–3, EMPEREST, ChemClimCircle 1–2, APRIORA, and others, the platform brings together existing knowledge and tools using the Baltic Smart Water HUB as its digital headquarters.

Using these collected materials, the project will:

1) establish a network of stakeholders providing three years of active exchange through public forums, online events, and other engagement tools;

2) bring tailored outreach materials to the target groups, enabling them to reach their communities;

3) assist national authorities and treatment plants with the adoption to the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive;

4) take the collected knowledge to the policy level and ensure an equal presence of both up- and downstream measures.

What is the expected impact?

The platform project aims to empower local and national authorities and different associations and NGOs to take the issues further within their large network of stakeholders.

While single projects have produced a great value of deliverables and outputs, the platform aims to increase their communicability and address the specific needs of the involved target groups.
