UN Ocean Conference - Side event: "MUD MATTERS – Tapping the Ocean Floor for Climate Solutions"
Organizers: AWI, BfN, BUND, CCB, hereon, SAR

Description

While coastal “blue carbon” ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass meadows, and kelp forests have increasingly been recognized for their vital role in climate mitigation, marine sediments remain underappreciated in global conservation and climate strategies. To address this gap, AWI, BfN, BUND, CCB, Hereon, and SAR invite you to a two-hour side event aboard the German Research Vessel METEOR during the 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice. This event will spotlight the critical role of marine sediments as blue carbon ecosystems. It will explore how human activities affect their carbon storage capacity. The discussion will also cover the conservation actions needed to safeguard their climate function and support the achievement of Paris Agreement goals.

Join us for expert presentations, interactive discussions, and networking opportunities. Together, we aim to elevate marine sediments in the blue carbon agenda and accelerate ocean-based climate action!
