Wind and Waves: Advancing Offshore Wind and Solutions for Marine Sustainability
15 January 2025
Description
Our oceans are deeply interconnected and essential for life on Earth. They provide food and oxygen, store carbon, and regulate our climate. However, the expansion of offshore wind energy, while crucial for Europe’s green energy transition, must be planned and executed to safeguard these vital ecosystem functions. Under the patronage of Jutta Paulus, Member of the European Parliament (Greens/EFA), Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V. (DUH) and Seas At Risk are delighted to invite you to an important event highlighting the need for transnational cooperation in sustainable and nature-friendly offshore wind development. This cooperation is essential to protect our shared marine ecosystems while simplifying the development process.
Together with experts from the European Environmental Agency, Wind Europe, The North Sea Foundation, and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) – Department of Coastal Systems, we will discuss advancing marine spatial planning and streamlining marine protection regulations for offshore wind development across national borders. Achieving the ambitious NSEC goal of 260 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050, while ensuring the long-term health of marine ecosystems, will require innovative, nature-based, and forward-thinking solutions rooted in transnational collaboration.
CCB participant in the meeting:
- Andrea Cervantes, CCB Biodiversity Officer
Speakers:
- European Environmental Agency
- Viktoriya Kerelska (Wind Europe) – Director for Advocacy and Messaging
- Pim Somers (North Sea Foundation) – Project Lead Nature-Friendly Offshore Energy
- Prof. Myron Peck (Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) – Department of Coastal Systems
