Description
The third HELCOM holistic assessment (HOLAS 3) provided a comprehensive overview of the Baltic Sea’s ecosystem health during the assessment period from 2016 to 2021.
HOLAS 3 covered a broad range of topics relevant to the stated of the ecosystem, included environmental pressures, societal drivers and their effects on human well-being. The findings supported environmental policy formulation and enable us to monitor our progress towards achieving the goals and objectives set out in the 2021 HELCOM Baltic Sea action Planned.
This online event marked the launched of the Stated of the Baltic Sea 2023 summary reported, which consolidates and integrates results from various assessment products from HOLAS 3.
A presentation of key findings from HOLAS 3 was followed by a panel discussion ‘Now that we know, where do we go?’ moderated by Gun Rudquist (Baltic Sea Centre, Stockholm University).
Speakers at the event included Rüdiger Strempel (HELCOM), Jannica Haldin (HELCOM), Lone Munk Søderberg (Danish Ministry of Environment), Dominic Pattinson (OSPAR), Michel Sponar (European Commission) and Johanna Källén Fox (WWF).

Outcome of the event:
- This event effectively showed the overview of the ecological of the Baltic Sea providing specific information about the structure, SPIA, and economic and social inputs surrounding the six main topics in the HOLAS3 Assessment. The increased information and data helped recognise more challenges for the protection on the Baltic Sea. The presentation also covered several possible alternatives and recommendations, such as the incorporation of a new report towards an ecosystem-based approach, considering the high costs of inaction and the heavy threat of hazardous substances.
