Description

The CCB CoastWatch Days are back for a second edition! The CCB CoastWatch 2023 took place from September 27 to October 27 in the Baltic Sea Region.

What is CoastWatch?
It's a type of citizen science activity where the public can contribute to research monitoring of coastal areas.

CCB has been doing coast observations in Baltic countries together with local activists, teachers, and schoolchildren for the last 20 years.

The Baltic Sea unites 9 countries located on its coast. The impact of the coastal activity on the sea is enormous, including coastal erosion, partly as a climate change effect, a growing number of visitors to the coastline, and associated impacts e.g. disturbance/destruction of natural habitats, more significant amounts of litter generated in coastal areas, import of invasive plant species. The coastal zone is a common and valuable shared resource, for which we have responsibility.

CCB's Maritime Working Area prepared a simple questionnaire for the CoastWatch Days 2023. It can be filled out while walking along the shore and it doesn't require any special knowledge, so everyone can join.

How works the Coastal Watching Days?
- Step 1: Organise a field trip to the coast and make observations using our questionnaire: Questionnaire in English.

- Step 2: Write a short article/post on any social media about your coastal watch experience adding #CCBCoastWatchDays.

CoastWATCH can include general observation of the coast; biodiversity monitoring, bioindication; plastic monitoring: marine litter, microplastic pollution, and brand audits. You can find more information about marine litter, microplastic pollution and brand audits.
Watch the webinar about brand audit by #breekfreefromplastic here and get data forms in English, German, Ukrainian, Russian and 11 more languages.
