Description

The joint "Offshore Renewable Energy Webinar: Marine Protected Areas and Restoration", organized by CCB and WWF Baltic Ecoregion Programme, took place on 25 September 2023 from 15 to 16 CET via Zoom.

The expansion of renewable energy in the region is a clear step in the right direction to reduce our use of oil and gas and address the climate crisis. In the case of offshore renewable energy, this is quickly expanding in the Baltic Sea, with many nations securing deals to introduce and increase projects for wind farm development in the coming years. How can Baltic countries live up to climate and offshore wind ambitions that are aligned and allow the fulfillment of commitments to protect our natural world?

This year, the health of our marine life and the potential for offshore wind to provide clean and sustainable electricity and deliver energy security have been brought into sharp focus. Yet, what does research tell us about the cumulative impacts of offshore renewables on valuable and already compromised marine and bird life? How will efforts to restore the Baltic Sea to reduce eutrophication and face biodiversity loss be impacted? This webinar brought together experts from different sectors to explore the linkage between offshore renewable energy, marine protection and restoration.
