Description

The 4th BONUS Symposium: Food web knowledge synthesis for the Baltic Sea has been held online on 21 October 2020, 09:00 – 12:00 CET.

The aim of the symposium was to share key insights and conclusions regarding Baltic Sea food web knowledge and the resulting resource management implications from the BONUS XWEBS and BONUS BLUEWEBS projects with stakeholders, more specifically the resource management and conservation community, but it was open to scientists and other interested parties.

What was the topic?
Food webs are essential for ecosystem functioning, and the incorporation of food web knowledge in resource management under global change has been highlighted as future priority. As foundation for such efforts, the BONUS XWEBS and BLUEWEBS projects have synthesized the rapidly growing but often dispersed body of food web information for the Baltic Sea. We now understand more about past, present and possible future states of Baltic food webs under cumulative pressures. At the same time, we have also identified important knowledge gaps hampering understanding in this field, and barriers preventing food web knowledge use in management. This improved understanding provides new insights into some of the key environmental and resource management issues in the Baltic Sea, and holds important lessons for the future.
