Which instruments of the EU common agriculture policy are able to bring positive impact on the Baltic Sea environment?

DESCRIPTION

Eutrophication is a major environmental problem of the Baltic Sea and requires far-reaching measures to reduce nutrient inputs. Therefore the 2007 HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan (BASP) and consequent HELCOM Ministerial Declarations from 2010 and 2013 are addressing eutrophication as a primary target for all Baltic Sea Region (BSR) countries. The BSAP establishes the following ecological objectives specifically connected to fighting eutrophication:

  • Concentrations of nutrients close to natural levels

  • Clear water

  • Natural level of algal blooms

  • Natural distribution and occurrence of plants and animals

  • Natural oxygen levels
