Underwater noise, quiet please!

DESCRIPTION

The marine environment is a place full of sounds. Waves rush and thunder, sea ice crunches and squeaks and animals use sound for hunting, locating, communication or to hear approaching predators. Man-made underwater noise can disrupt this natural soundscape and harm the marine ecosystem.

Where many human uses and activities come together in the oceans, it is particularly noisy. Sound travels about 5 times faster and much further in water than in air. For marine animals, the sounds that are most problematic
are those that are very loud and unexpected or whose frequency overlaps with their communication.

This leaflet made by BUND informs about the problem of underwater noise and shows ways to solve it. Below you can download the leaflet in Lithuanian.
