Online event – The Final Sprint for Europe’s Rivers

Description

Will Europe’s river basins return to health by 2027? Time is running out to implement the Water Framework Directive.

WWF and the Living Rivers Europe coalition launched online the second edition of their report, “The Final Sprint for Europe’s Rivers”, on Tuesday, 26 October, from 9:00 to 10:00 am CEST.

Europe’s rivers are under threat, with 60% of them in poor ecological health, unsustainable water use in agriculture, and alarming biodiversity decline. Is Europe really on track to return its fresh waters to health by 2027 as the Water Framework Directive requires?

Member States have only a few months left to finalise their river basin management plans for the next six years. In the online event, they presented the findings of the analysis of 21 drafts of River Basin Management Plans in 11 EU Member States. The guest speakers shared their conclusions and the necessary actions to ensure the final sprint towards the 2027 deadline is successful.

Speakers:
-Hans Stielstra - Deputy Head of Clean Water Unit, DG Environment, European Commission
-Nicolae Stefanuta - Member of the European Parliament
-Claire Baffert - WWF EPO and Sergiy Moroz - European Environmental Bureau
-Ewa Leś - Coalition Clean Baltic and Polish Ecological Club
-Rafael Seiz - WWF Spain
-Corina Gheorghiu - WWF Romania
