What is HELCOM? The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) and a regional sea convention in the Baltic Sea area. HELCOM was established about four decades ago to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental cooperation. Description

The 16th Meeting of the joint HELCOM-VASAB Maritime Spatial Planning Working Group (HELCOM-VASAB MSP WG 16-2018) was held in Helsinki, Finland, on 8-9 May 2018, upon invitation by the Ministry of the Environment of Finland and upon the joint invitation by HELCOM and VASAB. It was held back-to-back with the first international consultation meeting of the Finnish maritime spatial plans (7–8 May), to which the Ministry of Environment of Finland sent a separate invitation.

The HELCOM-VASAB MSP WG 16-2018 started on Tuesday, 8 May 2018 at 14:00 in the Ministry of the Environment, (Aleksanterinkatu 7) and ended on Wednesday, 9 May at 16:00.

The major themes for the meeting were strengthening of the ecosystem-based approach in MSP, evaluation of the progress in implementation of the regional MSP roadmap, coordination and follow-up of regional policy including linkages to a broader maritime policy perspective, and other tasks from the work plan of the group. The themes such as Pan Baltic Scope project implementation, work plan on green infrastructure and MSP aspects in maritime policy were also discussed. HELCOM-VASAB MSP WG acts as the Steering Committee concerning the MSP part of the Horizontal Action Spatial Planning of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The Meeting also followed-up on developments under EUSBSR.

The Meeting was chaired jointly by the Working Group Co-Chairs Mr. Joacim Johannesson, Sweden, and Ms. Katarzyna Krzywda, Poland.
