Coastal University

2021 - 2022

This project was based on an annual international event to create a strong center of modern knowledge, linking experts and giving the opportunity to participants to learn about peculiarities of different coastal zones in the Baltic Sea Region.

HISTORY OF THE PROJECT

Coastal zones are among the most productive areas in the world, offering a wide variety of valuable habitats and ecosystem services that have always attracted people and human activities. However, this intense concentration of population and excessive exploitation of natural resources puts enormous pressure on our coastal ecosystems leading to biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, pollution, as well as conflicts between potential uses, and space congestion problems.

The first edition of Coastal University was created and founded by Irin Breining, from @waterfrontsave (Russia), in 2021 as 3 series of webinars devoted to sustainable planning taking into consideration an ecosystem approach, and the participation of citizens, researchers, representatives of municipalities and maritime and urban planners.

On this occasion, the results of the EU project Land-Sea-Act were shared among the participants.
