CCB SEMINAR IN RUSSIA

CCB SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

30 November - 1 December 2005
St. Petersburg, Russia

On 30 November and 1 December 2005, the seminar on sustainable treatment of household wastewater was held in Pushkin, a beautiful suburb of St.Petersburg, Russia. The seminar was organised by the Centre for Environmental Initiatives under the auspices of Coalition Clean Baltic at the Education Centre for Top Managers, located in the old Kochubey Palace.

The seminar introduced new views and solutions on wastewater management, for small- and medium-sized municipalities and single-family homes. Different strategies and techniques were covered, from measures at the point of origin to the end of the pipe. The Swedish experience in this sphere was presented by leading specialists of Water Revival Systems, which has the unique practice of implementation of projects for small-scale wastewater treatment systems, vegetation and sludge treatment, and storm water management since 1990.

From the sustainability point of view, important is reduction of nutrients - nitrogen and phosphorus, - and of BOD in the released treated wastewater. The treatment technologies that also allow for nutrients recycling have great advantage here. The seminar included presentations of such techniques for source separating of household wastewater: toilets and systems with urine-separation, black-water separation, and grey-water separation.

At the seminar, the advanced Swedish experience was presented in construction and operation of different systems for robust wastewater treatment, with focus on different outdoor systems, such as sand filters, irrigation systems, chemical precipitation in ponds and wetlands systems. Different strategies for upgrading small-scale wastewater treatment plants were discussed, and training on planning for upgrading wastewater treatment in small villages was performed.

The seminar participants were experts from the St.Petersburg Vodokanal - the state-owned company running wastewater treatment in St.Petersburg, specialists from Vodokanals in different towns of the Leningrad region, representatives of authorities responsible for wastewater treatment in St.Petersburg and Leningrad region, institutions involved in planning and construction of wastewater treatment facilities, and private companies working on construction of small-scale wastewater treatment facilities.
