Baltic Coalition wins Environment Prize

The Swedish-based "Coalition Clean Baltic" has won the DKK 350,000, Nordic Council Environment Award, 2004. The theme this year was
protection of the Nordic marine environment.

The adjudicating committee issued the following statement:

The prize goes to CCB for the model way in which the organisation has brought environmental organisations from the Nordic Region, the Baltic States and elsewhere together into a single network. This has made it possible for the Coalition to draw attention to, and influence public on, one of the biggest environmental issues facing the Nordic Region, the threat to the marine environment in the Baltic Sea. The Coalition has used information, training, new technology and specific projects to create new platforms for ideal forms of environmental work. It has been able to put forward important proposals for solutions to environmental problems in the Baltic, e.g. emissions, excessive use of fertilisers and over-fishing.

Environmental organisations from nine countries around the Baltic Sea set up CCB in 1990 to facilitate co-operation in the region.

CCB is a politically independent, non-profit-making body and now has 27 member organisations in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden and Germany.

One of CCB‚s priorities is the promotion of sustainable fishing.

Most of CCB‚s work consists of information provision, environmental training and other activities designed to attract public attention but it also takes part in specific projects financed by the more affluent countries around the Baltic Sea.

The prize will be awarded during the Nordic Council Session in Stockholm,1-3 November.
