The year 2006 was marked by many successes achieved by member organisations of Coalition Clean Baltic members. However, our common Baltic
Sea is still facing many challenges.

In the coming year, I wish all of you still more successes in our common efforts to make the Baltic Sea cleaner and life on its shores more sustainable.

Green World fights nuclear electricity

Green World monitors a new hazardous project at the Baltic Sea. Export of electricity from the Leningrad nuclear power plant via 150-km long cable on the bottom of the Gulf of Finland is planned. The project will result in export of electricity produced by one 1-GW reactor of the NPP to Finland and Sweden.

VI Baltic Sea NGO Forum
was held in Saltsjobaden, near Stockholm, Sweden, on 5-7 October 2006. It gathered about 200 NGO activists working in various spheres.

Four thematic seminars were organized within the Forum. The Environment and Sustainability workshop was organised under the aegis of Coalition Clean Baltic, and was moderated by Maret Merisaar.

Together for the future
EU-Russia Forum on Civil Society Cooperation

was held in Lahti, Finland, on 17 and 18 November 2006. The Forum gathered NGO activists, politicians and journalists from Russia and EU countries with the aim of discussing the forms and possibilities of the EU-Russia cooperation on a citizens' level. Over 300 participants of the Lahti Forum representatives 17 European countries.

Environmental issues were discussed at the workshop and at the Fourth plenary session. Its main themes were climate change, EU-Russia energy relations, and nuclear safety. Please find presentation by Alexander Fedorov from the Centre for Environmental Initiatives here
