Work of Coalition Clean Baltic in the Baltic Sea RAC

Interview with Gunnar Noren, the CCB Executive Secretary, a member of the Baltic Sea RAC Executive Committee
The Baltic Sea RAC is the new structure established in March 2006 to give advice to the European Commission on fishery issues in the Baltic Sea. Coalition Clean Baltic is a member of the Baltic Sea RAC. Gunnar Noren speaks about the prospects of CCB work within this new structure.

CCB salmon study trip in the South of Sweden
One of CCB's prioritised working areas is protection of the naturally spawning Baltic Salmon. During 3 days in May 2006, 7 salmon experts within the CCB network were invited to participate in a study trip to rivers holding naturally spawning populations of the Baltic Salmon in the South of Sweden. The purpose of the trip was to see solutions that actually work.

Estonian Green Movement work with salmon
The EGM reason for work with salmon is poor condition of the wild salmon stocks in Estonian rivers. The main factors restricting fish migration are man-made hydrotechnical structures and natural terraces, and poaching for salmon. EGM held salmon seminars and organised salmon spawning place restoration works on Pirita river.

Conservation and restoration of the Atlantic Salmon spawning sites in Belarus rivers
This is the title of the new project supported by CCB in Belarus this year. The project is implemented by the Neman Environment Group from Hrodno (Belarus) jointly the Lithuanian colleagues and with cooperation from the Belarus state environmental departments. In the course of the project detailed information about anadromous salmons in the Belorussian rivers will be collected.

Our Common Baltic 2006
Between 26 June and 2 July, CCB together with Stensund Folkhighschool arranged for the 16th time the summer course "Our Common Baltic". The 12 participants came from Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.

Lake Peipsi Circle - 2006
This bicycle campaign continued the tradition of International Moving Environmental Conferences. It was organised by the Centre for Environmental Initiatives, Dodo-the Living Nature for the Future, Friends of the Baltic, Estonian Green Movement, and Lake Peipsi Project. The main goal of the campaign was promotion of sustainable transport solutions and public participation in municipal planning. Environmental activists started on 1 July in Ivan-Gorod, biked around Lake Peipsi, and finished on 15 July in Narva. Along the entire route - Slantsy, Gdov, Vetvenik, Seredka, Pskov, Izborsk, Pechory, Ruusa, Räpina, Tartu, Mustvee, Kauksi, Jõhvi, Sillamae - they had meetings with local activists, representatives of mass media, and local residents.
