HELCOM states back Baltic Sea action plan
The nine Helcom member states and the EU agreed on a common vision of a healthy Baltic Sea and identified ecological objectives to meet the vision. They approved a task force to take the Baltic Sea action plan forward.

EU committed to halting biodiversity loss in Europe and significantly reducing the rate of loss worldwide
The EU has set itself the objective of halting the loss of biodiversity on its own territory by 2010.

EU's support for biodiversity continues in next Framework Programme
Nearly every economic sector around the planet has an impact on biodiversity or its conservation status. This is why the EU funds research in this domain and will continue to do so with the launch in 2007 of the EU's next Seventh Framework Research Programme (FP7).

Ramsar MOC with the European Environment Agency
Peter Bridgewater, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, and Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, have signed a memorandum of cooperation, effective 27 February 2006, which covers a number of areas chiefly relating to the improvement, exchange, and use of Ramsar sites data.

A European research team has recently reviewed wastewater reclamation technologies and reuse applications in Europe. The authors estimate that the development of common guidelines and new economic tools, as well as improved communication between stakeholders, could enable better wastewater reclamation and reuse.

Russia: river monitoring pact signed with China
On 21 February 2006, China and Russia signed a formal agreement to jointly monitor the water quality of transboundary rivers. The agreement originated after the chemical spill when some 100 metric tons of toxic nitrobenzene entered the Songua River on 13 November 2005 due to an explosion at a petrochemical plant, and next entered the Amur River in the Russian Far East in December 2005.
