The dramatic and, in some cases, damaging environmental changes sweeping planet Earth are brought into sharp focus in a new atlas launched to mark World Environment Day (WED). Produced by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), One Planet Many People: Atlas of our Changing Environment compares and contrasts spectacular satellite images of the past few decades with contemporary ones, some of which have never been seen before.

Commission proposes new resources for combating pollution at sea
The European Commission has proposed a financial package of 154 million euros over a period of seven years for the European Maritime Safety Agency to allow it to combat pollution caused by ships. The funds will enable the Agency to make specialised anti-pollution vessels available to Member States to recover pollutants and develop satellite images to detect pollution in good time.

Bathing Water: Overview of the situation in Member States
The EU Bathing Water Directive lays down two sets of bathing water quality standards: minimum imperative values, with which compliance is mandatory, and stricter guide values, with which compliance is desirable but not obligatory. Member States are required to monitor the water quality in their designated bathing areas through regular sampling during the season and to report the results to the European Commission.

German Wetland Under Threat
The Spree Forest, a remote wetland south of Berlin, is a nature-lover's paradise known for its many narrow waterways. But researchers say the pristine region is in danger, blaming changes in climate and industry. The Spree River runs through the immense Spreewald Biosphere Reserve southeast of Berlin. It starts in the Lusatia region, near Poland, and is known for its traditional irrigation system consisting of 1,300 kilometers of small channels and waterways. Alder forests and wetlands alternate with sandy pine forests, grasslands and fields in a landscape that seems to have been little affected by the forces of modernity.

Still no recovery in sight for Europe's cod stocks
Cod stocks will remain perilously low unless the European Commission and the EU Fisheries Council follow ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) advice to considerably reduce fishing in European waters, warns WWF. To prevent its commercial collapse, ICES published today a press release on its scientific advice demanding a complete halt to cod fishing in Kattegat, the strait between Sweden and Denmark, in 2006.

EU drafts ban on mercury in thermometers
The European Commission has circulated a preliminary draft of new EU legislation banning the use of mercury in measuring devices like thermometers, barometers and manometers. The restrictions could prevent up to 25 tonnes of mercury entering circulation each year, it says.

HELCOM deletes two Lithuanian Hot Spots from the Baltic Sea major polluters list
The Helsinki Commission today officially deleted two Lithuanian Hot Spots from the list of the Baltic Sea most significant pollution sources. Among the deleted Hot Spots are Lithuania's biggest city and capital Vilnius, and the municipality of Alytus. The cities have carried out vast modernisations of their wastewater treatment plants in recent years.

HELCOM to develop a strategic Baltic Sea Action Plan by 2007
The Helsinki Commission announced today that it will develop by 2007 a strategic Baltic Sea Action Plan to further reduce pollution in the Baltic Sea and repair the damage done to the marine environment. The decision was made by the Heads of Delegations of the HELCOM Member States at their regular 17th Meeting, which took place on 14-15 June in Helsinki, Finland.
