We do not have any new CCB projects in 2004, but have concluded right now CCB coast project (official project of 2003).

Our main activities in 2004 will be the following:

Baltic Sea related:

- big international governmental shipping security conference in
Kiel in early May (CCB will participate with Valdur Lahtvee as invited speaker);

- probably more!

In the beginning of the year we have been devoted to following activities related to the
Baltic Sea:

- finalizing CCB coast project;

- (December 2003): BUND statement and participation in public hearings on offshore Natura 2000 sites (in the Exclusive Economic Zone/EEZ of North and Baltic Sea). With the proposal of these sites, Germany takes the lead within the EU states in designating Natura 2000 areas in the EEZ;

- on regional level (the Federal States, also Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern): the third bunch of Natura 2000 sites is under discussion and in the public participation period (for pSPAs = Bird-areas just starting now in Schleswig-Holstein). BUND has prepared/is preparing statements etc. In general, strong fights are going on, e.g. farmers very much opposing designation of Natura 2000 sites;

- in the frame of activities of the national office on transport policy, a series of very bad projects is presented in a "Black book", and additional leaflets on the individual projects will soon be printed. One of the bad examples: the planned mega-bridge between the island Fehmarn and the Danish island
Lolland across the Baltic Sea. It would negatively affect migrating birds, possibly the hydrology/water exchange of the Baltic Sea, and the adjacent land areas due to increased traffic. The traffic forecast is highly overestimated.
Another one from the
Baltic Sea: a massive second bridge to the island Rügen, right between two SPAs (EU-Bird protection areas).

Related to marine issues:

- BUND has appealed against an approval for a huge offshore wind park in the
North Sea, in a site discussed for Natura 2000 to protect inter alia harbour porpoise, and various bird species... The appeal is at present pending in court – it is still unclear if BUND has, in this case, the right to appeal or not.

- for BUND on national level: Federal Transport Infrastructure Project (and Investment) Plan is under discussion and intensively worked on by our national office (the last months already, still on-going)

- and much more...
