Nitrogen removal or not? That is still the question!
For a long time Swedish scientists have debated the effectiveness and the consequences of reducing Swedish emissions of nitrogen in order to abate the eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. The discussions have led nowhere and during 2005 the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency engaged an international expert panel for an objective evaluation.

Tellingly, the expert panel is also divided concerning the effects of nitrogen removal to the Baltic Sea. But, in their report they stress the importance of putting efforts into reducing phosphorous.

New regulations for wastewater treatment in Finland
In the beginning of 2004 new regulations for wastewater treatment for households outside the municipal sewer network were introduced in Finland. Hopefully this will lead to improved water quality, but could lead to that wastewater treatment plants will have to treat considerably higher amounts of nutrients.

Read the FSNE paper about the introduction of the new Finnish legislation here.

EU and Russia agreed on fishing quota 2006 for the threatened eastern cod stock, at a level 230 % higher than the scientific advice. Overexploited Baltic cod stocks are still at risk for the long-term survival.
2/3 of all wild Baltic salmon river populations are threatened, but IBSFC's recommendations still allow for extensive catches of the salmon in mixed open-sea fisheries.
